HISTORY

In 1856, legislation was petitioned to create Pottawatomie County with Westmoreland becoming the permanent county seat in 1882. Wamego was incorporated in 1868 along a Kansas Pacific Railroad route. Riley County was one of the original 33 counties established in 1855 with Manhattan being selected as the county seat in 1858 following a contentious election process.

AMENITIES

Wamego USD, Riley County USD, Manhattan-Ogden USD and Blue Valley USD are among the school districts serving students in Pottawatomie and Riley Counties. The main campuses of Kansas State University and Manhattan Christian College are both located in Manhattan, Kan.


Wamego Health Center is a 25-bed, critical-access hospital featuring on-call physicians, 24-hour emergency and laboratory, imaging and rehabilitation departments. Via Christi Hospital provides a wide range of health and wellness services with 150 physicians, 800 employees and 350 volunteers serving patients.

Economically, Pottawatomie County is largely agricultural with education, healthcare and manufacturing also important sectors of the workforce. Fort Riley, a US Army installation, covers 100,656 acres and has a daytime population of around 25,000. K-State is also a major economic force with over 6,000 employees.

RECREATION

Maintained by Pottawatomie County, Oregon Trail Park contains natural underwater springs and more. In Pottawatomie County there are 15,000 acres of wildlife refuges, five state parks, several lakes and more than 100 miles of hiking, biking and equestrian trails.

Riley County also features recreational trails in addition to 28 public parks, Turtle Creek State Park, Sunset Zoo, Konza Prairie, a historical museum and more. Arts in the Park and Country Stampede are among the most popular and biggest annual events held in the county.


CLIMATE

The annual mean temperature in northeastern Kansas is similar to the national average. Sunshine and rain are generous with distinct seasonal changes. Summers are warm to hot with relatively low humidity, while in the winter it tends to be dry and cold. Yearly precipitation includes 34 inches of rain and 19 inches of snowfall.
